How to Find a Mentor Who Actually Helps You Win

In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in the 21st century, and the power that people have at their fingertips through technology is absolutely staggering. I read an article the other day about how a college student hacked an autonomous drone. Or, how about the student that flew a drone using the new Google Glass technology?
Right now, this very second anyone with an Internet connection and some sort of computer can learn almost anything. They can make huge sums of money completely outside of the traditional economy.
They can turn themselves into experts, thought leaders and construct digital empires.
However, the one thing they all face is that they must find the right mentors to teach them.
Self-instruction only goes so far and then you need to consult with the higher-ups. Mentors are so valuable it isn’t even funny. It’s hard to find data on how much is being spent on all sorts of coaches and mentors out there, but I’d be willing to bet we’re talking huge numbers.
How to Acquire Top Notch Mentors
Don’t even start looking if you cannot or aren’t willing to pay for quality mentoring. You can’t nickel and dime good mentors because they won’t work for cheap. They understand the value they represent.
Start figuring out what it’s going to take to make you a good candidate for their services, or an ideal student.
What EXACTLY is it you want to learn. You might as well start narrowing things down and figuring this out because this is typically the first thing a good mentor will ask you to do.
Actively look for people you aspire to be like that have used mentors and them ask them about it. Become a mentor detective and start finding clues and leads you can track down.
Don’t click on Google results. Go by personal referral only. There are countless “mentorship” programs that are scheming to make a buck off you, not to show you the way to financial independence or beast mode.
What Constitutes a Quality Mentor?
Simple: how many of their students can now call themselves mentors? How many of their clients highly recommend them? There’s no such thing as a top notch mentor who doesn’t have plenty of positive customer feedback and testimonials. The list of traits that good mentors possess is too long to get into here. But one thing is for sure: you’ll know it the second you meet them.
Assessment
Would you be a good student right now? Are you a good listener? There’s nothing worse than someone who approached a proven mentor and then interrupts constantly and tries to act like they already know it all.
Remember, no random clicking on mentoring websites or programs from simple search engine results. Who do you have in your life right now that you can approach to track down a good mentor? Don’t say anyone because we’re connected to just about everyone through minimal degrees of separation. Happy mentor hunting!
