Why Team Sports Matter for Your Social Skills (Even as an Adult)
When I look at 10 guys, I know who are the absolute best with women. Eight of the ten played a lot of baseball, football, and basketball. That's not a coincidence.
Are team sports crucial in a social or professional setting?
It’s important to try to understand why team sports matter. When I look at 10 guys, I know who are the absolute best with women. I say 8 of the 10 played a lot of baseball, football, and basketball. That’s not because football makes you better with girls. When I look around at our clients, many seek social skill development. And, I look around and my friends are social beasts and animals with women. They’re alpha male guys. They’re charismatic; they understand social protocol.
On the other hand, when I look our clients, the people who come to us for help in certain social areas, most of them didn’t play team sports: baseball, football, and basketball.
Sports give men a huge advantage not because of their strength or glory on the field, but simple mathematics.
You have teammates, rivals, spectators; that’s a lot of people, a huge sample size.
When you don’t play team sports, you don’t have that sample size to draw from.
Social skill isn't talent. It's repetition most men simply never got enough of.
And though it’s too late for you, as an adult, to go back in time or to become a professional athlete, you can still develop the team camaraderie, the social skills from working with other people and a fun environment. In a lot of major cities you can join kickball teams and they all drink after kickball at whatever bar.
Flag football teams are great ways to meet friends, girlfriends and social contacts. Barbecue picnics and business lunches are born of such meetings. Come watch your new friends play even if you don’t and you’re bound to meet lots of new people. You’re getting out there, you’re meeting people, you’re building a social circle. You’re around women; you’re getting in better shape. You’re learning new skills.
Team Sports are Really Easy Fixes
Different sports or clubs or teams mean different circles, different groups of friends. It’s a great way to meet people, and I think it’s really important and it increases your sample size to help you draw conclusions about things that do work and don’t work. You’re learning what works in a social situation and what doesn’t. You’re watching others and emulating them and they, you hope, are emulating you; that’s one way to know they consider you a person of value, of quality, and that’s how you make it onto all those invitation lists.
You're not too old to build the sample size you missed out on. You just have to show up.
Assessment
You’ll also be collecting lots of new stories to tell and experiences and insights to share, and that will make you a more intriguing and attractive person overall to business and social partners of every rank.
