How to Get Access to High Achievers (Without Being Fake)
The first step to influencing someone or getting them to put you on their side is to do them a favor. Not ask for one, do one.
Once you figure out whom you need to start filling your inner circle with, then it comes time to actually approach them and earn their trust/friendship. We can go straight to Psychology 101 and see that the first step to influencing someone or getting them to put you on their side is to do them a favor.
It’s a two-pronged approach. First, you gain access to the people who have what you want or need, and then you need to start actively sourcing ways that you can add value to their lives and perform favors.
Trade services! Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the old-school barter system is dead, because it most definitely isn’t. Not by a long shot.
Get your foot in the door.
Start small and ask for or perform small favors initially, but highly exceed expectations. Go above and beyond. Bend over backwards. Most relationships begin with a small request.
Be flexible and allow time between trading services with someone. Don’t expect them to pay you back right away. Wait. Be patient. If you did a stellar job, they will return. If you added value to their lives, they’ll show you gratitude sooner rather than later.
If they ask you for a service that is way outside your realm, turn it down and offer something more reasonable.
Access isn't given. It's earned in small, unglamorous moments most men are too impatient to invest in.
Services Can Be Just about Anything
Okay, you’re a graphic artist savant, but maybe the people you want to get close to don’t need a graphic artist. So what? There are many ways you can be of service, but the most important ones are the services that these people need as human beings, not necessarily business folks.
Draw on what you can do, but be willing to perform the services they need if you’re looking to trade.
Test yourself and see how flexible you can be. How far are you willing to go?
Oftentimes big rewards will come when you aren’t trading outright, but treat what you do for these people as a gift. Then they feel no pressure or obligation.
Find out what the people you want to attract are after, and then start giving it away for free within proximity to them. Chances are, they’ll catch wind of it and come looking.
"You don't need to be impressive. You need to be useful. Those are two very different games."
Assessment
Maybe they don’t need a graphic artist, but what if you rock at basketball but their teenage son doesn’t? Take stock of not only everything you’re good at, but also everything you’re capable of doing. Remember, trading services is a general idea, so what services can you render.
Swapping services isn’t hard to pitch, unless the person you’re pitching to is way out of your league. At that point you’re going to have to find an alternative option.
At the end of the day though you need to get your proverbial foot in the door. Sometimes the best way to do that is to get close enough.
